San Sebastian will kick off the European Capital of Culture year with an
ample programme of activities that will start on January 20th
(coinciding with San Sebastian Day), and end on the 24th of that same
month.
The tamborrada will start off with a special Flag-raising, with the
participation of the Orfeón Donostiarra concert choir. Along with the
local flag, the European flag, Wroclaw’s flag and the one bearing the
symbol of DSS2016EU will be raised. This year the tamborrada includes
the special linking of the seven areas or districts of the city and each
corresponding company will be given a special drum that will be taken
to each district for the whole day as a witness of such as special
event. Rounding off the Flag-raising event will be the Kresala dance
company, in the Constitution square, which will adorned for the occasion
with white and blue drapery around the balconies.
Right after, the tamborrada will start its usual route that will also
reflect the spirit of union and fraternity of 2016 because throughout
the 24 hours that the tamborrada lasts, all the companies will interpret
the Iriyarena piece in unison every three hours. Finally, the
tamborrada will come to its inevitable end with the lowering of the flag
and the return of the commemorative drums distributed throughout the
city, with a final event full of surprise guests and with the
participation of the Easo Choir.
